The GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier)

A GEM is a thin (50 µm) isolating foil with an array of tiny holes (150 µm pitch and 50 µm diameter), coated on both sides with a conductive material. Applying a voltage between both sides provides a high electric field inside the hole, accelerating and multiplying drifting electrons from the chamber. GEMs provide a good timing and local resolution. Moreover, they are relatively easyly handable flexible foils.
